Unified Board ‘Trusts God’

Tigerville, SC (March 16, 2021) On Thursday, February 18, the North Greenville University (NGU) Board of Trustees convened in a Zoom format for its first meeting of 2021. NGU welcomed new board members, who will make a huge difference in the community’s life to achieve its distinctive mission and vision to cultivate transformational leaders for church and society. New chair Mike Hamlet, senior pastor of First North in Spartanburg, is an experienced leader and is an enormous encouragement to the senior leadership team.
February also marks the fourth anniversary of NGU President Dr. Gene C. Fant, Jr.’s introduction to campus as the eighth president in NGU’s history.
“It’s hard to believe that we are about to start our fifth year of service. We love this community so much and continue to long for God’s blessings on our Christ-first mission,” said President Fant.
The Board shared gratitude for the strength, talent, and cohesiveness of Board members in support of the NGU staff, faculty, administration, and student’s mission and contributions. There was a great sense of unity in looking beyond COVID and to evaluate looming challenges on the horizon relative to new federal regulations.
President Fant reported NGU as a healthy community experiencing a positive year against the backdrop of a pandemic. NGU hasn’t slowed down in the pursuit of its mission. The key concept for 2021 focuses on Psalm 20:7, the assurance of God’s saving work, which states, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” Applied to NGU as “some take pride in leaders, and others in well-prepared plans, but NGU trusts in the Lord our God.”
Committee Reports
Committees reported on exciting initiatives that were accomplished and new ones scheduled to start soon. These programs included designing a core curriculum for the institution, newly minted academic partnership with New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary with more on the way, fundraising levels are running 20% ahead of last year, deferred fall sport and traditional spring seasons are in full swing for the semester, campus ministry and student engagement events, a new website set to launch in late March.
Degrees Conferral
Trustees unanimously approved granting degrees to approximately 335 students that fulfilled requirements for conferral for Spring 2021 Commencement. One ceremony will be held in Melvin and Dollie Younts Stadium at xx p.m. on April 30, 2021. COVID-19 protocols will be adhered to for the event.
Other Affirmations
The Board unanimously affirmed Baptist Message 2000, NGU’s statement on Human Flourishing, By-laws, Board Policy Manual, and relevant laws of SC.
COVID-19 Response Team
An update of the work of the COVID-19 Response Team was given. NGU is grateful for God’s protection from the global pandemic and is grateful for the hard work of the COVID19 Response Team; this week marks a year since it first began serving the University.
