‘The Vision’ student work wins SCPA awards

Tigerville, SC (March 24, 2021) North Greenville University’s (NGU) College of Communication and Fine Arts student-produced online publication “The Vision” won three awards in the South Carolina Press Association (SCPA) for 2020. Students won two first-place awards with sports and feature stories and one second-place honor in a video category.
Trey Stewart (expected ’21) from Greenville received first-place awards for his “Woodrow ‘Woody’ Dantzler III: A dual-threat life” sports story and “Derrick and Chadwick Boseman: A brotherhood that stood the test of time” feature story in the “collegiate under 5,000” category which is for colleges with a student enrollment under 5,000. Bethany Fowler (’20) from Cowpens won second place for “NGU battles COVID-19,” a piece she produced for a broadcast journalism class. Her category was “open division,” competing with schools of any size across the state.
“It has been my pleasure to work with Trey and Bethany for several years and watch them grow as journalists and communicators,” said “The Vision” Magazine and “The Vision” Online Adviser Karyn Campbell. “They have worked hard on our student media and deserve this recognition from the SCPA.”
The S.C. Press Association serves to strengthen the Palmetto State’s newspaper industry, enhance public understanding of the role of newspapers, and protect basic freedoms of press, speech, and the free flow of information. We proudly represent all 15 daily and 74 weekly newspapers.
According to SCPA’s website, 800 news, associate/individual, and collegiate contest winners come from 3,270 incredibly strong contest entries. The results show that despite the challenges of COVID-19, SC newspaper journalists worked tirelessly over the past year to produce incredibly impactful journalism.
The SCPA Annual Meeting & Awards Presentation will be held on Oct. 23, 2021, at The Marina Inn at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach.
