Finn elected new SBC recording secretary in 25 years

Tigerville, SC (June 22, 2022) Southern Baptist Convention messengers elected Dr. Nathan Finn, North Greenville University’s chief academic officer, as the convention’s recording secretary for 2022-23.
Dr. Finn, NGU Provost and Dean of the University Faculty, was chosen at the SBC’s 2022 annual meeting in Anaheim, CA, last week.
Finn’s election marks the first change in the recording secretary post in a quarter of a century. John Yeats, executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention, had been elected to the position unopposed 22 of the last 25 years. He opted not to seek re-election in 2022.
“Nathan is a world-class scholar, a faithful preacher of God’s Word …, a voice for the Gospel, and a dear friend,” said David Sons, pastor of Lake Murray Baptist Church in Lexington, in his nomination. “I know of no one better qualified to tell our story, to help express and encapsulate our cooperative efforts, than one who has dedicated his life and ministry to doing that very work.”
Of the 5,315 ballots cast, Finn received 2,727 votes or 51.31 percent of the vote.
“I am honored that Southern Baptists have entrusted me with the office of Recording Secretary. I am excited for the privilege to help tell the story of the Great Commission work that God is doing in and through Southern Baptists,” said Finn.
In addition to Finn, other SBC officers elected during the annual meeting include President Bart Barber, First Vice President Victor Chayasirisobhon, Second Vice President Alex Sands, and Registration Secretary Don Currence. Sands is pastor of Kingdom Life Church in Simpsonville and immediate past president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.
