Family Weekend Ends with Victory
Posted on: February 4, 2021
(October 1, 2018)Family Weekend 2018 was delayed two weeks by Hurricane Florence, but families who were able to attend the alternate dates, had a blast! Over 80 families attended the outdoor movie, information sessions, excursions, and athletic events that comprised the special weekend.
For those arriving on Friday night, the Lady Crusaders defeated Converse College at home in three sets. Afterwards, students and families enjoyed a movie on the grounds outside the Tingle Student Center. Saturday morning sessions and afternoon excursions were capped by a victorious Crusader football game televised on ESPN3.
Morning information sessions focused on student success during college, as well as what to do to prepare for life after graduation. Many afternoon excursions showcased popular locations close to campus. There was also plenty of time for families to hangout on campus or explore Travelers Rest on their own. At check-in on Saturday morning, every family received a booklet highlighting places to eat and things to do, and included local “Family Favorites” selected by NGU faculty and staff.
Family Weekend attendance has increased dramatically over the past three years, spearheaded by the efforts of Director of Student Activities Brittany Hendrix.
“We have taken steps to increase the appeal of our excursions, and create useful information sessions for our parents and students,” she said. “The goal of the weekend,” she explained, “is to let parents know they are a part of the NGU Family. They are members of our community, and we want to share a snapshot of campus life with them.” The Office of Student Life is excited to engage more members of the community next year, and hopes to have several sponsors to increase outreach to NGU families.
