Tim Brashier Campus to Benefit from Leadership Greer Service Project

Tigerville, SC – Leadership Greer, a nine-month leadership class sponsored by the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, funded a service project for the betterment of the Greer community. The project raised over seventy-one thousand dollars to install over 40 AED units and public emergency response kits in the Greer area. The amount raised doubled their original goal.
Dr. Tawana Scott, NGU’s assistant vice president of graduate academic services, was a participant in this year’s Class 38. The service project allows for two units to be placed inside the Tim Brashier Campus in Greer.
“It has been an amazing experience,” Scott said. “It was a joy to be a part of this talented class that came up with this life-saving concept.”
A Ribbon Cutting ceremony for the project took place on April 19 in downtown Greer.
“This [Leadership Greer] is a great program with a long history that I think has made a significant difference in our town,” Greer Mayor Rick Danner said during the ceremony.
“You’ve [Class 38] seen what it takes now to make a community function, and your work is an integral part of who we are and who we’re going to be in the future,” Danner said.
The idea for the project came out of cardiac arrest being the number one killer of people in the United States.
A local AED survivor Tony Gilliard shared his experience of surviving a cardiac arrest at the ceremony. Having access to an AED while playing basketball at Fairview Baptist Church saved his life.
“I’m glad to be alive,” said Gilliard. “This is just so awesome that we could get these in the community and people know how to use it.”
Greer and Pelham-Batesville fire departments helped with training people how to use the AEDs and placing them strategically throughout the area.
All 41 locations will be given kits containing life-saving bleeding control equipment such as tourniquets, pressure dressings, and gauze bandages.
