Students to Perform Haydn’s ‘La Canterina’

Tigerville, SC (October 30, 2018) On Friday, Nov. 9 and Sat., Nov. 10, the North Greenville University Cline School of Music will feature “La Canterina-The Diva.” The two-act opera will be directed by Cline School of Music professor Dr. Cheryl Greene. The cast includes Dr. Cheryl Greene, and students Caroline Hartzog, Chelsea LaCourse, and Ashleigh Moore.
Written in opera buffa style, “La Canterina” is a comedic opera by Joseph Haydn. Appreciated by classical theater and music lovers alike, “La Canterina” is a tale of how two women endeavor to use manipulation and greed to achieve their goals of prosperity.
Junior music major Chelsea LaCourse has been pushing herself to adopt the role of Gasparina, the main character.
“Gasparina is manipulative and extremely flirtatious. She uses two men in order to get what she wants—which is not like me at all!” said LaCourse. “I love acting because you get the chance to be someone you’re not. It gives you a chance to explore things outside your comfort zone.”
LaCourse, who plans to graduate in 2019, says she has enjoyed singing since she was a child. Her foray into musical theater took place in 2012 when she was a member of the Carolina Children’s Theatre production of “The Sound of Music.” “La Canterina” will be the third time the Cline School of Music has presented an opera in its entirety in their 19 years of hosting opera workshops.
“I’ve done several shows with Carolina Children’s Theatre since then. I’ve even gotten to direct the music in a few of the productions,” said LaCourse. “‘La Canterina,’ however, is my first full opera. I’m very excited to be able to perform a role.”
