History Professor to Give Mourning on Thanksgiving Lecture

Tigerville, SC (October 30, 2019) Dr. Brendan Payne, North Greenville University assistant professor of history, will present a lecture ‘Mourning on Thanksgiving: Myth, Memory, and Native American Voices’ on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. at the Landrum Library on 111 East Asbury Drive in Landrum. The lecture is part of recognizing Native American Heritage Month.

While many celebrate on Thanksgiving, others mourn. Dr. Payne will explore why many Native Americans see the coming of the Pilgrims to New England as a tragedy and challenge us to rethink our national myths about Thanksgiving. By seeing our past rightly, we can recognize the legacy of injustice that continues in the present and work together for a future that all can celebrate.

Payne earned a bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College, IL in 2008, a master’s degree from Gordon-Conwell Seminary in 2012, and his doctorate from Baylor University in 2017. He taught at Central Texas College and Baylor before coming to NGU. He currently has a book under a contract with Louisiana State University Press.

The lecture is free and open to ages 12 and older.
