Health Science to host Medical Missions 5K
Tigerville, SC (July 30, 2019) North Greenville University’s (NGU) Physician Assistant (PA) program’s mission is to develop well-informed and compassionate PAs who provide patient-centered and service-oriented medical care in diverse environments. The vision of the program is to transform health care for the benefit of communities. One way that the program is doing this is through medical mission work.
This year’s PA medical mission trip will include NGU’s Health Science program. The undergraduate students will be accompanying the PA graduate students on their trip to Nicaragua.
“We work with Chosen Children Ministries (CCM), a non-profit organization based out of Spartanburg, SC,” said PA Medicine Program Manager Katie Shamblin. “[CCM] already has established relationships with the Nicaraguan people through church planting, education, economic development and child sponsorship. This allows us the opportunity to establish clinics in many communities we would otherwise not be able to reach.”
The populace has very limited, if any, access to medical care.
“As part of the trip, our PA students focus heavily on preventative medicine, providing basic medical care, patient education, daily vitamins, antibiotics and medications for chronic conditions to those that would otherwise not have access to this type of care. Additionally, we also like to incorporate oral hygiene into this initiative,” said Shamblin.
Again this year, the medical mission team needs your help.
In the past, the team has treated approximately 250 patients. They hope to treat even more patients this year but need help from others. In additional to donated items and monetary donations, a 5K fundraiser is being held this year.
On Saturday, September 7, NGU’s Health Science will host a Health Science Medical Missions 5K on the Tigerville Campus at 7801 N. Tigerville Road, Tigerville. Entry fee for the 5K is $20 per person plus a $2.85 handling fee and an event T-shirt are available for $10 plus a $2.24 handling fee. Registration is now open.
Also at the event, donations will be accepted for hygiene items that will be offered to the Nicaraguan people. A few of the hygiene items needed are: deodorant, travel size toothbrushes/ toothpaste, bar soap, sandwich and gallon size Ziploc bags, Germ-X, and Ibuprofen to name a few.
