Eddy Receives SCICU 2022 Excellence in Teaching Award

Tigerville, SC (April 21, 2022) South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) honored faculty leaders at its Excellence in Teaching Awards Dinner on April 5 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia. Christina Eddy, professor of biology, is North Greenville University’s (NGU) 2021-22 SCICU Excellence in Teaching award recipient.
Each year, SCICU recognizes and celebrates the best of the best with its Excellence in Teaching Awards. According to rigorous guidelines, a faculty member from SCICU’s twenty-one member institutions is nominated for the award.
NGU Provost and Dean of the University Faculty Dr. Nathan A. Finn said that Eddy is well deserving of this award and is an excellent representative of the NGU community.
“Dr. Eddy exemplifies what it means to be a member of the North Greenville University faculty. She is a dedicated follower of Christ, a beloved classroom teacher, and a role model to her students. She is also a leader among her peers, having served as Faculty Chair in 2019-20,” said Finn.
2022 marks the 17th year of the SCICU Excellence in Teaching Awards Program. Each year SCICU member colleges and universities use rigorous criteria to select a faculty member to receive the SCICU Excellence in Teaching award. Award recipients receive a framed award certificate and a $3,000 professional development grant from SCICU.
“Dr. Chris Eddy is the cornerstone of the biology department. She is exemplary as a colleague, a researcher, a mentor, and as a faculty leader,” said Dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences Dr. Paul Thompson. “She has a depth and breadth of professional experience, Christian character, and academic excellence that makes her most deserving of this award. NGU is blessed to say that Chris Eddy is on our faculty.”
Eddy has served on the North Greenville faculty since 2005. She holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Marquette University and participated in post-doctoral research at the University of Florida.
She has 30 years of teaching and research experience. She has teaching experience at Mississippi State University, Skidmore College, and Red Rocks Community College. She also has research scientist experience at Zeagen Biotech and The National Renewable Energy Laboratory and is currently a consulting scientist for Aglife LLC.
Eddy always had a desire to study science. Like many students interested in biology and chemistry, she was interested in becoming a physician. During her undergraduate training, she had the opportunity to do research and decided to attend graduate school. At that point, her goal was to become a professor at a small college.
“Dr. Eddy is well-deserving of this award. She is an innovator in the classroom, designing curricula, training students, and incorporating faith in her teaching. In addition to being a master teacher, she is also a teacher-mentor, helping guide and train new biology faculty members,” said Assistant Provost for Instruction and Assessment and Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Jan Foster. “She is an outstanding member of the NGU faculty, and we are honored to celebrate her this year.”
Eddy’s ambition is to train excellent scientists who can use what they learn to share the gospel. She has led four teams of students on mission trips to Costa Rica and India. They taught science lessons in schools, trained families on sustainable technology, shared the gospel, and encouraged believers in areas where Christians are isolated. She is thankful to share her faith and experiences with the students at NGU.
