Teacher Cadet Program Now Offered Free to High School Students

Tigerville, SC (April 22, 2022) North Greenville University (NGU), a leader in teacher development, values educating future educational leaders. It is evident by the recent hiring success of the College of Education (COE) graduates. The COE has touted a 100 percent hiring rate among graduates who sought a teaching job over the past five years. This success fulfills the school’s mission of cultivating graduates who are equipped to serve as transformational leaders for church and society.
NGU’s Teacher Cadet Program encourages academically talented, high-achieving, high school students with exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills to consider teaching as a career. An important secondary goal of the program is to develop future community leaders who will become civic advocates for public education.
NGU’s program allows high schoolers to take a dual credit accrual course for a minimum of one class period per day for a year or the equivalent of that amount of time in contact hours. Beginning in Fall 2022, in addition to the Introduction to Education course, NGU will offer a second dual credit class, Educational Psychology. The standard $50 per course fee will be waived, a savings of $2,247 per course or total cost savings of almost $5,000 if taken as a full-time undergraduate student. All hours earned from these classes may be applied to a degree at any accredited institution.
The Teacher Cadet Program uses an innovative approach designed to attract talented young people to the teaching profession through a challenging introduction to teaching. The program seeks to provide high school students with insight into the nature of teaching, the problems of schooling, and the critical issues affecting the quality of education in America’s schools.
“By dropping our fee, we can connect with more schools who want to partner with NGU for Teacher Cadet but cannot afford to pay a fee,” said Dean of the College of Education Dr. Constance Wright. “We are also one of fewer than ten colleges in South Carolina that offer an additional course option (Educational Psychology) for students to take that will seamlessly transfer into our teacher education program. This is beneficial for students who participate in Teacher Cadet because they can take these two transferable courses for free.”
Piloted in four South Carolina high schools in 1985-86, the Teacher Cadet Program has grown to include 188 South Carolina high schools with 233 classes serving 2,991 juniors and seniors annually. More than 71,000 students have participated in the Teacher Cadet Program in its 34-year history.
