September 23, 2022 | 7:00 pm

Exuberant Ellingtonia: Music of Duke Ellington and His Circle will be held in the Hamlin Recital Hall.

Tickets are available now in the SOT Box Office or online to the public. Approximately 90 minutes.

The Bloom/Funkhouser Duo performing a chamber-jazz concert called Exuberant Ellingtonia. It’s an exhilarating program with classics like I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart, Caravan, Prelude to a Kiss, Jump for Joy, In a Sentimental Mood, Chelsea Bridge, and other great music by Duke and his extraordinary collaborators Billy Strayhorn, Juan Tizol and Mercer Ellington.

Peter H. Bloom has shared the stage with Sheila Jordan, Charles Neville, Ricky Ford, Geri Allen, Jaki Byard, Jimmy Giuffre, and other jazz greats. Praised for “exquisite melody” (Jazz Improv) and “hip, jazzy flute work” (AllAboutJazz.com), Bloom performs in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia, and is featured on 48 CDs. A winner of the American Musicological Society’s Noah Greenberg Award, he is acclaimed as both a classical and jazz artist. Bloom has given lectures and master classes across the globe and is contributing editor for Noteworthy Sheet Music. ArtsFuse praised his “amazing versatility” and wrote, “his solos on flute and amplified flute are always highlights of a performance.”

John Funkhouser has appeared with notables like Luciana Souza, Tierney Sutton, Ran Blake, Herb Pomeroy, Laszlo Gardony, Stan Strickland, and piano savant Matt Savage. Hailed for “a unique and engaging sound” (North Denver Tribune), he has performed at Birdland, Blue Note, Dizzy’s in New York, the Kennedy Center, New Orleans Jazz Festival, ABC’s 20/20, NBC’s Today Show, and other top venues from Kansas City and Chicago to Paris, Singapore, and Hong Kong. He taught at Berklee College of Music from 2001 to 2021. “Funkhouser is masterful…maintaining a delicate balance of power and agility with an instinctive musical sense.” (AllAboutJazz.com)

Peter H. Bloom, flute, and John Funkhouser, piano, have performed together for almost 30 years. They can be heard on the new CD, Exuberant Ellingtonia: Flute & Piano Sessions (“one of those albums that we know are unique jewels” – Jazz, ese ruido, Spain). Here are three short video clips:
