Greenville College Network Computing Policy
North
Greenville College is responsible for securing its network and computing
systems in a reasonable and economically feasible degree against
unauthorized access or abuse, while making them accessible for authorized
and legitimate users. This responsibility includes informing users of
expected standards of conduct and the punitive measures for not adhering to
them. Any attempt to violate the provisions of this policy will result in
disciplinary action in the form of temporary revocation of user accounts,
regardless of the success or failure of the attempt. Permanent revocations
can result from repeated network abuses. Normal college disciplinary
procedures will apply in all cases of abuse or misuse.
The users of
the network are responsible for respecting and adhering to local, state, and
federal and international laws. Any attempt to break those laws through the
use of the network may result in litigation against the offender by the
proper authorities. If such an event should occur, North Greenville College
will fully comply with the authorities to provide any information necessary
for the litigation process.
North Greenville
College reserves the right to examine electronic mail in the event that
any of North Greenville College’s policies have been violated. North Greenville
College reserves the right to examine server logs in the event a network
user could be violating any of
North
Greenville College’s Network policies.
North Greenville
College reserves the right to refuse access to the network, to electronic mail, and any of
the Internet facilities at any time in which:

The
testimony of North Greenville College could be hurt,
-
The
policies set by North Greenville College are not upheld,
-
Or
when access results in misuse of any computer equipment relating to the operation of
Campus Information Systems.
Section 1: General
Computing Policy
Once a user
receives a UserID to be used to access the network and computer systems on
that network, the user is solely responsible for all actions taken while
using that UserID. Therefore:
-
Applying for a
UserID under false pretenses is a punishable disciplinary offense.

Sharing your
UserID with any other person is prohibited. In the result that you do
share your UserID with another person, you will be solely responsible for
the actions that other person appropriated.

Deletion,
examination, copying, or modification of files or data belonging to other
users without their prior consent is prohibited.

Attempts to evade
or change access limitations are prohibited.
-
Continued
impedance of other users through mass consumption of system resources,
after receipt of a request to cease such activity, is prohibited.

Use of facilities
or services for commercial purposes is prohibited.
-
Any unauthorized,
deliberate action which damages or disrupts a computing system, alters its
normal performance, or causes it to malfunction is a violation regardless
of system location or time duration.
Section 2:
Electronic Mail Policy
Whenever you send
electronic mail, your name and UserID are included in each mail message. You
are responsible for all electronic mail originating from your UserID.
Therefore:

Forgery (or
attempted forgery) of electronic mail messages is prohibited.

Attempts to read,
delete, copy, or modify the electronic mail of other users are prohibited.

Attempts at
sending harassing, obscene or other threatening E-Mail to another user are
prohibited.
-
Attempts at
sending unsolicited junk mail, “for-profit” messages or chain letters are
prohibited.
-
Creating or
relaying spam for any reason is prohibited.
Section 3: Network
Security
As a user of the
network, you may be allowed to access other networks (or the computer
systems attached to those networks). Therefore:
-
Use of systems or networks in attempts to
gain unauthorized access to remote systems is prohibited.
-
Use of systems or networks to connect to
other systems, in evasion of the physical limitations of the remote
system/local, is prohibited.
-
Decryption of system or user passwords is
prohibited.
-
The copying of system files is prohibited.
-
The copying of copyrighted materials, such
as third-party software, without the express written permission of the
owner or the proper license, is prohibited.
-
Intentional attempts to “crash” Network
systems or programs are punishable disciplinary offenses.
-
The willful introduction of computer
‘viruses” or other disruptive or destructive programs into the
organization network or into external networks is prohibited.
Section 4: Internet
Usage and Conduct
As a user of the Internet, you have access to
a broad range of content that ranges from useful to obscene. You must
act responsibly when viewing or distributing pictures, images or
information. Therefore, no student, faculty or staff member shall:

View, copy, print or distribute images that
the college deems patently offensive from the internet or other computing
devices, or use college property to create, scan, or transfer such images,
-
Use Internet access for commercial purposes,
-
Download and/or distribute copyrighted
material without the consent of the owner, or
-
Engage in any activity that consumes
internet resources to the exclusion of other uses or users.
